    Andropause Q&A

    What is andropause?

Andropause is better known as male menopause. Women experience menopause, in which their hormone levels plummet, and they stop menstruating during their early-to-mid 50s. Menopause brings many unpleasant symptoms, including challenging physical and emotional changes.

Men experience andropause, in which their male hormones (testosterone) levels decrease about 1% per year, starting at around age 40. Similar to menopause, andropause can disrupt your daily life.

What are the symptoms of andropause?

Andropause can cause symptoms such as:

    • Decreased libido
    • Decreased sexual performance or erectile dysfunction
    • Reduced muscle mass
    • Increase in belly and breast fat
    • Mood swings
    • Irritability
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Insomnia
    • Reduced energy levels
    • Hot flashes
    • Shrinking testicles

Every woman experiences menopause, and most have disruptive symptoms. While all men lose testosterone as they age, only about 30% of men in their 50s experience disruptive andropause symptoms. This percentage generally increases with age.

    How is andropause diagnosed?

Andropause diagnosis begins with a comprehensive medical evaluation at Live Well Wellness Center. The team performs a physical exam, reviews your symptoms, evaluates your medical history, and conducts testing to check your testosterone levels.

Blood testosterone testing ideally occurs in the morning, before 10 am. The practice has on-site labs to make your testing easy. The team can then evaluate your blood test results right away.

Normal blood testosterone levels are 300-1000 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL) or 10-35 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L). If your testosterone levels fall under these ranges, the team may determine that your symptoms relate to testosterone loss during andropause.

You’ll also have other lab tests to identify problems like high cholesterol, which may contribute to blood flow issues and problems like erectile dysfunction.

    How is andropause treated?

At Live Well Wellness Center, the team focuses on improving your overall health and wellness and preventing illness. Innovative natural approaches can help you avoid most or all of the symptoms of andropause.

Some of the most common approaches for andropause management include:

    • Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy
    • Acoustic wave therapy
    • Peptide therapy
    • Intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy
    • Botanical medicine

The team also gives you personalized lifestyle advice to help with weight loss, diet, exercise, and changing unhealthy habits to provide you with improved bodywide health.
